Dear Golden Globes,

Well, at least you got Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Rachel Weisz right. I know you forgot this time, but if you could, please remind the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to reward the films that ACTUALLY have the best writing, directing, plot, and performances? You know, instead of the overrated media whore movie that only had ONE decent performance and a pretty score? Because I saw most of the nominees and at least three are superior to Brokeback Mountain on every possible level.

XO,

It's about 65 degrees right now. I wish it would stay this way forever. It makes it feel like fall. I love fall. Fall weather is great, fall baseball is great, hockey starts in the fall, and fall means my wedding is almost here. So let's hurry up and ditch this summer crap, because I am SO DONE with heat and waiting for the playoffs, hockey, and, of course, the wedding.

It's funny how everyone is posting that "Top Five" meme now. I remember back in the good old days we had an entire "Top Five wall" in my college apartment and when people would come over they would make their contributions. Is that like meme-ing for people who don't blog?

(Note: I'd post the meme, but with a friends list of about so few people, even fewer of whom actually post, seems pretty pointless. Even if I am THAT bored at work.)

(Note about the note: WTF is with the city? It's like a ghost town on Fridays with everyone going down the Cape. My train was totally empty. I wish I took long weekends down the Cape. But instead I come to work and do nothing. *pouts*)

My interests [24 Jun 2005|04:09pm]
So I tried the "rare interests" meme that seems to be going around? Two of the 20 recs were related to Northern Ireland. Fourteen of my 20 recs were players on the Sox. One was Theo Epstein, one was Fenway, one was NESN, one was "hating the Yankees."

Interesting.

Nick Hornby did a reading and book signing in Brookline yesterday so Bryan and I wandered over despite its being sold out. We arrived a minute or two after it was scheduled to start because, obviously, taking the Green Line anywhere means you will be a minute or two (or 20) late to pretty much everything. It worked to our advantage, however, because the usher just waved us in and all we missed was a bit of the MC's introduction. We didn't even have to pay the $2 the ticketholders payed.

As expected, Hornby was funny, wry, and full of self-loathing. He exhibited a reasonable amount of knowledge about Boston, no doubt derived from his participation in the whole Fever Pitch debacle. Read a bit from his new book, which seems pretty good. After that pretty much everyone present trundled across the street to the bookshop to buy the new book and have it signed. Pretty standard fare- "To Alexis- Love, Nick Hornby."

I thought this was a pretty cool evening until this morning when my co-worker told me that last night he tried on an authentic, 100 percent real Red Sox World Series ring. Now Hornby's a pretty cool guy, but nothing beats a Sox World Series ring. Alas.

The Movie Meme (gacked from [info]thunderemerald )

Take this list and post it into your own LJ, and bold the movies you've seen.

Add five more movies to the end of the list.

Count how many movies you have seen. If you've seen more than 70 movies, you are a "movie whore".

Post the score of how many movies you've seen in the subject line.

Use an LJ-cut since you've got at least one LJ-friend who doesn't really want to see an ungodly number of movies snaking its way down the computer monitor.

Lacking in perspective, perhaps? [08 Apr 2005|08:38am]
Overheard on the T this morning:

"There's nothing worse than waking up with jetlag then going to the lobby and being served cold coffee. Nothing worse! I mean, it was a bona fide catastrophe."

At which point I turned up my MP3 player and let Joe Strummer take me away...

Will someone please tell me Mitch Hedberg is NOT dead? Please?

Belushi was before my time. I was still pretty young when Farley left this world. Hartman really broke my heart, but none of these guys were my favorite comedian.

He was the funniest bastard I've ever heard in my life. I wish the last time I saw him live hadn't been conflicting with the 2003 ALCS game 7 because I was too on edge to appreciate it. I so wanted to see him on this tour with Stephen Lynch. How fucking funny would that have been?

*sigh*

Do you ever just wish you could say, "I'm off at 5 o' clock and I don't even work for you! Your goddamn secretary comes back from vacation tomorrow! Can't this wait until then? It's 5:15 and I'm leaving, asshat!"

Because sometimes I wish I could say that. Yesterday, for example.

Happy Evacuation Day! Only one neighborhood in one city in the entire world celebrates this holiday (or even knows what the fuck it is*) and that happens to be MY neighborhood. So, you all have a happy and a healthy.

And, of course, a Happy St. Paddy's to all. As they say, if you're blessed enough to be Irish, you're blessed enough. I, however, am short of dear Padraig's blessings because my best friend's bridal shower is in NJ on Sunday, which is the same day as the parade. Total bummer. The other bridesmaids voted down my plea for "any weekend except St. Paddy's weekend. Please. Please!"

ETA- But that's okay because I just scored Dropkick tickets for tonight!

*Evacuation Day celebrates the fact that British ran screaming from Southie's shores on March 17 at some point or other during the Revolutionary War. There are lots of monuments and reeanactments and stuff.

Tom Brady's birthday present to me was another Superbowl title for New England. Of course, I barely care because football, while I like it well enough, is not one of "my sports" and because the game itself was tedious. But I appreciated his sentiment. Thanks, Tom!

Friday Bryan and I saw The Lion King. Tickets and dinner were his birthday present to me. It was a vastly over-rated show, as I suspected it would be. But it is also the only show in town at this time. It was nice to go to the theater, though. I haven't been since we saw The Producers in September. Plus, the puppets were pretty cool. (Not Avenue Q cool, but still neat.) Also, we bought used CDs and I found the Best Shoes Ever marked down from $125 to-- wait for it-- $20.

Saturday I turned 23 and no one really cared, but the madre and the bro came up and took me to dinner at some fancy shmancy place on Newbury to which ma's boss had given her a gift certificate. Mmm. Rare steak and Godiva chocolate cake. Heaven. (Even if none of your other family or friends remember or call or even shoot an e-mail your way.) I wore the new shoes.

And of course, yesterday was Superbowl and all I could think was, "Two weeks until pitchers and catchers report? Two? Or three? I hope it's two. Where's the hockey, anyway? Dammit!" Then Bryan gave me his cold and my chin broke out and this morning I came to work and found out I fucked something up, but my nose has finally stopped running and I have to consider that a minor victory.

Snow, parking, hockey-- reasons I may cut someone. [26 Jan 2005|01:24pm]
[ mood | aggravated ]

I'm torn between wanting the snow to just stop and wanting it to continue to the point of legendary accumulation. If it would stop and we could get temperatures in the 40s for a few days the city as a whole and Southie in particular would be much better off. If it continues to legendary status I might actually get to stay home from work for a day and I'd be able to recall this year sometime in the future the way the grizzled natives recall the Blizzard of '78.

I might mention that the DPW hasn't touched Southie since sometime in the early afternoon on Sunday. Too busy digging out the fat cats on Beacon Hill and Back Bay, where they are using precious manpower to dig out alleys whilst my street, an actual thoroughfare used for auto and foot traffic, remains a nightmare. Hopefully with the fresh snowfall upon us they will actually send some plows back to the neighborhood. In the meantime, I trudge to and from the T in ankle-deep snow in the middle of the street.

My mother and brother were going to come visit next weekend, it being my birthday and all, but at this point I'm advising them to post-pone. There's no place to park and it's not worth the risk of slashed tires or keyed doors of taking someone else's spot anyway. I'd give them our spot, but we don't want slashed tires either. Plus, it's a fine line. Who's more likely to get slashed? The car with NJ plates is an outsider coming in and taking the spot of a hardworking locol who spent hours digging it out. But it may also be forgiven as someone who doesn't know any better. Our car with MA plates could be regarded as some asshole who flagrantly disregards the unspoken neighborhood code of ethics. But it could also be forgiven as a hard-luck local just desperate to park. Conundrum.

But I like snow. I do. As long as I have electricity and soup and coffee and blankets I say bring it on. Hell, if someone parked in our space after we broke our backs to dig it out I'd not hesitate to slash some tires. I'll post-pone any February visitors and/or trips until April, drink cocoa, and watch replays of Red Sox games* until spring.

* I'd be still more snow-friendly if I could pass the time watching HOCKEY, but Gary Bettman and the NHLPA are not in agreement with me there. Has anyone else noticed that since Gary Bettman took over there have been two strike/lock-out situations and three teams from hockey supporting cities in the US and Canada have been re-located to markets like Phoenix and North Carolina? Also, Bettman agrees with the unwashed retards who think the game needs more scoring and is actively looking for ways to "open up" the game. WTF? Can we get rid of this guy, please? PLEASE?

[ music | Cat Stevens- Here Comes My Baby ]

* Friday was Bryan's company's year end party. It was a Foxwoods. Mohegan Sun is better. Foxwoods is like going to the dirt mall and finding some craps tables. Lame.

* En route to Foxwoods I passed two Tim Horton's (Horton'ses?). This excited me greatly as I've never seen them outside of Canada. There was one in CT and one in RI and now I need to know: Is Timmy's expanding to the U.S.? Or are these just mirages designed to turn me against Dunkies and leave me with no cherished donut distributer? Will Tim Horton's come to Boston? Is Stan Mikita's Donuts next? Will the questions ever end? This discovery has thrown me into such turmoil.

* We got a rejection letter from the pre-cana class for which we tried to register. Returned check and rejection. WTF? Found another church, better church, closer church, cheaper church. F-- you, St. Joseph. I didn't want to give you my $75 anyway.

* Blah, blah, blah blizzard. Two feet of snow in Southie. The neighborhood looks like a scene out of some apocalypse movie. Six foot snow drifts that swallowed most cars completely. My street hasn't been plowed since noon yesterday and they only cleared one lane. This leads to...

* My commute was so totally awesome today. Bryan's company closed. Lucky bastard. Hospitals don't close. Ever. Bus service was sketchy and walking to the T in the sub-zero cold wasn't particularly appealing. Lucky me- our neighbor offered to drive me to the train since Bryan helped her dig her car out. Yay! Unfortunately, the lackluster plowing, the snow tunnel that was E. 6th St., and the poor handling of a rear-wheel drive coup made the .9 mile drive to the T more like Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Took 20 minutes. At the T I waited while two trains came and went, too full to take on anymore passengers. About an hour after my initial arrival at the station I finally got on a train.

* Work has mostly been cancelling and rescheduling today's patient appointments.

* I want to go home, have a snowball fight, drink hot chocolate and eat creamy tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. Instead, I am going to get another huge cup of coffee and linger around the fax machine.

I'm absolutely stir crazy. The weather sucks and I haven't left the house all day. This has resulted in my having made a loaf of lemon poppy-seed bread and a strawberry trifle. I've also watched "Garden State" and "Bottle Rocket" and done four loads of laundry. My veil arrived in the mail and I pranced around in that for a while. Bryan's been watching football for hours now and I'm too restless to settle down and finish the book I'm reading.

I'm so bored that I ordered that Les Mis mini-series thingy with Gerard Depardieu and John Malkovich from Amazon UK. Boredom makes me both a compulsive shopper AND a fifteen-year-old. I'm not even sure that my DVD player is region free! I guess I'll find out.

In summary and in conclusion: BLARGH! Would anyone like to come over and drink tequila?

Ugh. It's always shitty coming back after a week off. (Even if most of that week off was spent in a cramped car.) This is exacerbated by the fact that the office is moving next weekend and in addition to the normal workload there is now the extra tedium of archiving/logging charts, packing, labeling, etc. I have spent 3.5 hours staring at an Excel spreadsheet logging 490+ charts for patients whose last names begin with "S" and haven't been seen in our office for 4+ years. This is living.

The bright side to all this is that in a week from Tuesday my workload will be virtually cut in half do to changes in how patients will be handled in the new facility. And I'll be able to organize my desk from scratch. And I'll have a whole cube to myself rather than being shoved in a hallway. Plus, Bryan's company's holiday party will be the at Foxwoods the Friday after the move is finished. I think drinks and buffett on the company dollar are good ways to recover.

Also, I wish we'd get some real snow in the city instead of a pathetic 2-3" before changing to sleet. I missed the storm over Christmas and I actually like snow. I take the T anyway, so the whole thing only effects my commute marginally and I really don't care about the suckers in cars.
